Understanding the Problem

It’s no secret that poor food and activity choices ultimately lead to a person being overweight or obese.

In saying this, it is not being classified as overweight or obese that is the problem. The real issue stems from the associated preventable diseases that quickly follow suit, such as: Heart disease, Diabetes, Sleep-apnoea, Types of cancer, Osteoarthritis

What does this mean?

The cold reality of things is that if someone is classified as obese, there are going to be significant limitations on the quality of their life. There are going to be major implications on their work ability and employability. There are current economic ramifications in the order of 10% of total medical costs being attributed to obesity, not to mention future impact with an aging workforce. And it will reduce their life expectancy by 10 years.

And the problem isn’t going away any time.
Obesity levels continue to escalate, having increased by nearly 300% since 1980.

Even more alarming is the fact that Glenelg Shire residents are approximately 10% above the state average with regards to overweight and obesity levels.

It is said that for the first time in the history of mankind, the life expectancy or our children, and our grandchildren will be less than the previous generation.

The case for the Portland community to take action is very strong. SEA Change Portland are here to bring awareness of this and continue to support the community in making healthier life choices.
